Mobile profits: Apple and RIM eat up almost the entire cake when it comes

Talk operating profits, and share of revenues, and RIM (Blackberry) and iPhone take more than just a major chunk of the cake in the mobile phone business; actually, they leave very little for the others. Deutsche Bank analyst Brian Modoff, put two and two together as far as the operating profits of all major manufacturers and came up with what you see above; a glimmer of the gold in the pots of the two!
It reflects Nokia’s quickly escaping operating profits, and the mammoth share taken away by the iPhone and Blackberry.
Infact Apple and RIM are expected to account for a whopping 66 per cent of the profits this year! Apple has seen a very steady increase in profits from 3 percent in 2007 to 20 percent in 2008 and will grow again to an estimated 31 percent in 2009.
RIM has been doing even better with profits at 8 percent (2007) to 19 percent (2008) to 35 percent (2009). The only other smart company that seems to be trudging on close footing is Samsung, that whose profits increased from 14 prcent last year to an estimated 19 percent this year. Feel sorry for ya Nokia!
The value of software in the cell phone industry can hence no more be underestimated, and the figures above sure leave our throats dry. Too bad, but looks like the conventionals are going to have to change their route to stay along with if not ahead of the competition.
