AMD gains weight swinging the gaming see-saw towards itself again

August 13, 2008

amd-graphicsIf you thought AMD was not giving enough effort to swing the see-saw back towards itself in the ever-on battle between itself and Nvidia, then think again. With the introduction of the $549 graphics solution - the ATI Radeon HD 4870X2, which combines two graphics chips on a single PC add-in-card with relatively low power consumption, the company is definitely all set to grab its users by the neck.

The graphics solution also includes a lower performance ATI Radeon HD 4850 X2 card. Now the hardcore gamers can feel more pampered, considering this is going to make it twice as fast as Nvidia’s high-end single chip graphics design, the Nvidia GTX 280 at 0.93 teraflops.

The senior vice president at AMD in Sunnyvale, Calif, and general manager of the graphics products group, Rich Bergman calls it a “sweet spot strategy”. That I am sure it is, but I am sure it has the power to raise some sore spots when it touches Nvidia too. But, didn’t they say, all is far in love and war?

The new 4870 X2 card can compute 2.4 teraflops, a measure of its raw computing speed. Considering AMD shot for a smaller chip with slightly lower performance but much lower costs and much lower power consumption, it can afford to price its product cheaper than Nvidia’s too, which again makes it a sweat-driven situation for Nvidia again.

Too many sleepless nights ahead for Nvidia, eh? But what the heck, keep the war on boys. We get the best of it.
